Do you ever have one of those days where you feel like you can’t do anything right? Those days when you convince yourself that you are of very little value to your organization and your boss regrets hiring you? Full Disclosure: This is an accurate description of my week. It has been one of those weeks where I felt I could do nothing right, my opinions weren’t valued and I second guessed everything!
But sometimes, you have to encourage yourself. You have to remind yourself that to err is human, you have worked hard to get to where you are and you have to silent those caustic voices that tell you you’re not good enough. Because you are!
Here are 6 things that will help you feel more confident at work on days when you’re feeling less than worthy:
1. Remember the Past. Remember that time you gave that kick-ass presentation and wowed everyone in the room? Or how about that time you pitched a strategy and knocked everyone off their feet? When you’re feeling less than confident, it’s so important to remember your “bad-assery” and allow it to inflate your head a bit. Remember all the times you won and tell yourself that you are capable of doing it again.
2. Rest in the fact that you have to be challenged to grow. This sounds cliché, but if every day were easy, you’d be the same person you were before you started on your career adventures. Take the hard times at work that make you feel low and instead of focusing on the low, encourage yourself by knowing that you will grow from it.
3. Create a list of little wins. What is it they say? Don’t try to boil the ocean? Often times when we are feeling unconfident is because we are overwhelmed. And we are likely overwhelmed because are trying to do too much at once. I keep a list of even the smallest things so that I can cross them off my list, feeling like a boss every time the list gets shorter and shorter. It really is the little things.
4. Ask for Feedback. As women, we tear ourselves apart out of pure recreation. Why though? We are our hardest critics. That said, it’s very possible that we are actually overanalyzing the thing that is making us feel unconfident. To remedy this, ask for feedback from your peers or leaders. They may have a completely different perspective on your work than you do. This will allow you to recalibrate your perception and find tactical areas where you can focus improvements.
5. Fake it ’til you make it girl! I can’t tell you how many times I call upon my historical theatre experience to make everyone around me think I’m cool, calm, and collected even when I am a hot mess on the inside. The truth is, you get to decide how you come across. So even if you are not feeling confident, there’s not a single person in your workplace who has to know that. Pull your shoulders back, wear your power suit, put your game face on and take the day minute by minute.
